WHY PACKAGING OF GRAINS
The food manufacturing and processing industry is one of the largest Food Industries in South Africa which is highly depended on the market and the agro-industry to complete a full value chain. The packaging industry is a conduit between the producers and the consumer, which its main function is to deliver the product at the right quality and at the right price to the consumer. But that does not end there; there whole supply chain is supported by rules and regulation to protect and ensure the health and safety of the consumer.
In our qualitative research, we have positively identified that there are only a few fully black owed food packaging companies operating formally in South Africa, and in Lesotho there are no packaging business owned by local Basotho people. The second observation is that Lesotho like many other African countries is not self sufficient as far as food production is concerned and has not accomplished much in the agro business to commercialise its production.
The Free-State is considered to be the bread basket of South Africa where most farming activities takes place; therefore setting up a factory in Ladybrand, which is one of the agricultural towns, creates a huge benefit for the company in terms of haulage costs, proper storage facilities, and networking with farmers.
The true benefit that we have considered about Ladybrand as the location for processing is that our operations will continuously empower black farmers and cooperatives which are currently being supported by the department of agriculture to gain access to the market. We are the direct channel into the market, therefore should be able to stimulate their farming activities; and we believe that this can be achieved by partnering with government institutions to assist farmers in producing quality products that meets the international food standards.
The retail market which includes shops, supermarkets, and wholesalers are the major distribution channels for branded food grains in smaller packages ready for the consumer to pick on the shelves; and these are the distribution channels that we have already tapped into and are now experienced to trade in.
